Are you interested in becoming a KRD skater? Then you probably have a lot of questions about roller derby! Take a look at this New Skater Packet for some of the basics about the league, and this FAQ page should help answer other questions that pop up.

Q) Whom do I contact if I want to join your league?
A) Please fill out a contact form and we'll get you started!

Q) Can I start right away?
A) Yes! Kalamazoo accepts prospective and transfer skaters year-round. You don’t have to wait for a boot camp or a recruitment drive — you can come  and check out a practice anytime, and start whenever you’re ready. Don’t hesitate! Just reach out to us before you come so we know to expect you.

Q) When and where are practices held?

A) We currently practice in Paw Paw Wednesday nights from 7:00-9:00pm. Please contact us for more details if you would like to come!

Q) I haven’t had skates on since my sixth birthday party. Can I still join?
A) Of course. Skating experience is helpful but not necessary — some of our current charter skaters had never laced up a set of quads when they started. Many of us had never played a sport before we found KRD. We can teach you everything, as long as you have the desire to keep getting back up after you’re knocked down.

Q) How old do I have to be? How old is too old?
A) You must be at least 18 years old to skate with Kalamazoo Roller Derby. However, if you’re between the ages of 6 and 17, please consider joining The Killer Beez, our little sister league!

For more seasoned skaters, KRD has a 40+ club with several members. Your attitude is more important than your age!

Q) How is the league dealing with Covid safety at practices?

A) We are no longer requiring masks at practice based on CDC recommendation. Masks are currently optional at practice, but this is subject to change to reflect case number changes.

Q) I want to learn more about the rules of roller derby. Where can I do that?
A) WFTDA (Women’s Flat Track Derby Association) has a great website that can answer many questions about the rules of the sport. Visit them at www.wftda.com
